Today, a social simulation game built with Web3 tech has successfully raised $5 million in seed funding. The major financial boost seeks to further develop the game's unique features, including generative AI-powered NPCs and no-code creator tools.
Led by Sfermion and Big Brain, with contributions from GSR, Collab+Currency, Lingfeng Innovation Fund, Compute Ventures, and others, this funding marks a strong vote of confidence in Today's vision.
Central to Today's appeal is its use of AI to breathe life into the game's residents. These NPCs engage with players in realistic conversations, simulating human-like interactions.
Michael O'Connor, co-founder of Today, emphasizes their goal to transform player expectations: "We're transforming expectations by replicating the nuances of real-life dynamics using advanced AI that gives our NPCs unparalleled depth and responsiveness."
But Today's ambitions don't stop at AI. The game also boasts the use of blockchain and no-code technologies. Players can craft their own game worlds, fostering a sense of creativity. What's more, the introduction of NFTs allows for exclusive in-game content. Benjamin Cleary, co-founder and creative director, highlights the game's focus on storytelling: "Our story-first approach fosters genuine emotional connections with the characters in our game."
Looking ahead, Today has an alpha launch set for early 2025, with the team engaging the players through periodic playtests via Discord.
Today is backed by a seasoned team of Oscar winners and industry veterans from Nintendo, SEGA, Epic Games, and Unity. As players wait for the game's full release, they are invited to go on a narrative-driven adventure.
